In Canada the sellers and buyers use both Amazon USA and Amazon.ca marketplaces. The canadian one launched the third-party marketplace in 2003 and offers Amazon Prime since 2013. In 1998, after acquiring Bookpages.co.uk (UK online book retailer), Amazon launced it’s one of the oldest marketplaces - Amazon.co.uk, which is now the leading e-commerce website in UK, leaving behind it’s competitors, such as eBay UK.
In 2000, Amazon launched Amazon Japan (アマゾンジャパン) for Japanese people. In 2002 Amazon marketplace was opened up and Amazon Prime became available since 2007. It is now the number 1 most visited e-commerce platform in Japan, though Rakuten is leading here in terms of sales.
In 2004 Amazon acquired Joyo.com (卓越网) and Joyo Amazon (卓越亚马逊), which became a unified e-commerce website Amazon.cn ( 亚马逊中国). Amazon China marketplace became available for third party sellers since 2011.
One of the faster growing markets for Amazon is India. Amazon.in was launched in 2013 only, but it is already in the leading positions together with Flipcart and Snapdeal. Due to strict Indian laws, only Indian based retailers are allowed to sell on Amazon.in.
Amazon expanded their business to Italy in 2010 opening up Amazon.it. After one year, they introduced Amazon Prime for italian market. Since then it is the number 1 e-commerce platform, leaving behind its main competitor eBay Italy.
In 2011 Amazon opened up a spanish version of their store - Amazon.es. It instantly became a market leader with all competitors left behind.
In 2015 Amazon introduced it’s latest marketplace called Amazon.com.mx, which enables buyers to buy new and used items from third-party sellers as well as regular Amazon offerings.
In Q1 of 2017 Amazon plans to launch in Singapore. It might be due to the fact that in April 2016 Alibaba invested $1 billion into Lazada - a Southeast Asia e-commerce platform. Also, Singapore has the highest internet penetration rate in Asia - 82% (World Bank data, 2014).
Amazon announced to launch in Australia in September, 2017, after they cancelled the launch in March, 2016, as they wanted to have a greater product selection available on site. Currently, eBay is the most popular e-commerce platform in Australia. Though Amazon already has it's website there, it only offers books, Fire tablets, Kindle readers and other related digital downloads.
